Comedy Central Summer Idents
Comedy Central have been making people laugh since the late 80s. Famous for South Park, The Daily Show, Key and Peele, Roast, Drunk Histories and my personal favorite Ugly Americans (go see now). The Nordic division approached Crush to create a series of idents for the summer season, to be broadcast in Europe, The Middle East and Africa.
When proposing ideas to the client, i always think it’s good to spread your bets. Make one idea safe, one pushing it further and then put in a wild card, one that is probably out there, but shows off your creative chops, see if they bite. They bit with this one. The original idea was simply ‘a pig at a barbecue’ and ‘a dog getting tattoo’, but i think while the idea developed and we worked out what animals we could get, we started to think about what animals characteristics would suit certain situations, the preening rooster at the pool , the naked cat at the beach. We also decided to get all the logos in camera - so had to work those situations into the shoot.
I love jobs like this, getting the team together, finding space and time to shoot, working out the prop list, finding animals, they always end up taking over everyone in the studio by the last few days before the shoot. I think the results look great, the style is spot on, getting the backgrounds to look just the right side of crap was harder than it sounds and the lighting really takes it into a weird place, in a good way. The edit isn’t so successful, i think the client got carried away with trying to force a narrative into the clips, that they just didn’t need.
